As part of efforts by the African Union Commission to enhance the capacity of election management bodies (EMBs) in Member States of the African Union in line with the African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance, the Department of Political Affairs through the Democracy and Electoral Assistance Unit (DEAU) will build the capacity of the EMBs of the United Republic of Tanzania, i.e. the National Electoral Commission (NEC) and the Zanzibar Electoral Commission (ZEC) in July 2014. This forms part of the African Union’s support to the United Republic of Tanzania in preparation for elections in the year 2015.

The training programme will use the Building Resources for Democracy, Governance and Elections (BRIDGE) curriculum, which is the most comprehensive electoral training curriculum in the world, covering every practical area of elections management through the entire electoral cycle. The trainings will take place in Zanzibar for the ZEC from 7 – 11 July on gender and elections and in Dar Es Salaam for the NEC from 21 – 25 July 2014 on voter registration.

These trainings form the technical assistance mandate of the African Union Commission and are part of an on-going activity by the DEAU to build the capacity of EMBs of Africa Union Member States, in order to consolidate democracy and enhance the management of electoral processes on the continent.
